January Mapping Contest - $50 prize!

Postby Nameless » Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:43 pm

Thanks for your input Cyclone! (exactly why I wanted to submit a map)

I'll look into the loading problem, I didn't even know there was a quick load lol. Sorry its so short, I wanted to add much more, and for the next contest I'll get started much sooner!

This is my entry. It's my first Portal map, so the aim was to include everthing you can do in the official bonus maps. Hope you like it!

BTW, I read it wasn't possible to upload files larger than 6 MB to this site, so I uploaded it on RapidShare instead.

EDIT:
Shit, I just realized you can't have infodecal entities in a Portal map, because they disappear after loading saved games. Is it possible to upload a new version of the map before the deadline with info_overlays instead? Not a big problem though, but it's irritating for a perfectionist like me

Some of you have already played my entry as it was released earlier this month:
http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/dload.php?action=file&file_id=146

The maps WIP thread is here:
http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/tunneling-chamber-01-t694.html

Note: This map has not been updated since it's release as per contest rules.

Question: Since this map is already uploaded, do I need to re-upload it with the contest naming convention, or can I just leave it as is?

It was a very good and solid map, I have only two gripes with it: first of all make a non-challenge version too, and second please make all the glass destroyable since, well, it's easy to use rockets on them :)

Thanks for the feedback! Why make a non-challenge version? Does the counter bother you? Will see if I do anything about the glass for the final version.

Still don't know if the rules allow me to update the map until deadline. Would like to know this ASAP!

I'm not sure where I saw this, but I think what's been said in the past is that you are allowed to upload only 1 version of a map, and you are specifically not allowed to upload, get feedback, and then upload a newer version based on the feedback.

But I'm not an official source on contest rules.

Edit: Wow, Rapidshare sucks!

But, anyway, I might be the only one to have had this problem, but I tried putting the .bmz files entered by Aldez and Mage_ofOld into the root of my C:\ drive (cause I'm lazy) and when I tried to have the game install them from there it just stopped responding. So I eventually put them in the "...steam\steamapps\[YourUsernameHere]\portal" directory (where the game is looking for them by default and they loaded instantly.

So if you have a problem loading the .bmz then try that.^

You can upload files that are larger than 6mb, that bug has long since been fixed. If you please, go ahead and upload it to the Download DB.

And for the record, no, once you upload a map you cannot re-upload it to make changes until AFTER the contest is over. Private playtesting, etc. is allowed but public WIP and alterations are not.

I've gone ahead and moved it to the Contest Entries category, no worries. :)

Alrighty, my entry is ready as well; here's the link:
-Link removed- (bad copy)

Unfortunately, the file is pretty hefty and too big to go into the TWP database (it's over 64 MB). I have a lot of custom files, and it has HDR. I hope however long it takes to download, it will be well worth your trouble, as I promise, if you loved Portal's atmosphere, you'll enjoy this map.

Enjoy!

Riven, your map looks like it would be fantastic, but unfortunately it seems to be completely broken, for me at least. There are numerous errors in console about missing resources, I had to noclip to get out of the starting room, due to no portal appearing (unless there is some trick here that I missed), and when I died, the map died also, and no save was loaded.

It is a real shame, as the map looks fantastic. I suspect there is some fault in the method you used to place your resources in the bsp.

Anyoe else having problems with this map?

Same here. The map is over 100mb in size and is completely unplayable - very disappointing.

I noclipped to the room below and started from there. After I met the turrets at the end (?), I was trapped in a glass cage, and couldn't escape. Then I found the pipe under the floor, using noclip again. The pipe didn't always manage to push me upwards when needed, so I had to noclip through it and ended up in the first room. Riven, it's a pity you rushed to get this map in the competition. Would have been better if you waited for the next, because this map has potential.

LoveGLaDOS v1.1

Postby Grax » Sun Feb 10, 2008 9:12 pm

TWP admins: please choose either of these two entries (assuming at least one is a valid submission) to add to the contest maps section. I was under the impression that I could submit v1.1 to the contest since 1.0 had never been submitted as a contest map or mentioned anywhere in this thread, and work on this map was begun after the contest was announced. But the rules have never been 100% clear to me so please choose whichever you'd like to accept (if any). Thanks.

LoveGLaDOS v1.0

LoveGLaDOS follows the Portal campaign levels' visual style and gameplay relatively closely. It is about as difficult as the Advanced Maps.

LoveGLaDOS v1.1

Version 1.1 contains minor lighting improvements, some props detailing, and misc other small tweaks made to LoveGLaDOS version 1.0

Sorry, Grax, but the rules say no.

I hope you can still get version 1.0 entered though.
