This thread is for competition discussion only.

Read the rules in the Contest thread, but basically keep discussion about contest maps in here. Rules questions, screenshots, etc. can go in here if you want but should be posted in the Contest thread.

Perhaps once all the maps have been submitted they can all be compiled into a map pack so it comes up in the bonus screen as "TWP Compo Nov Maps" (or whatever) and once you go in there it will have all the entries?

It would save time downloading and installing each map manually which I am sure puts some people off.

What do you think?

I think that was the plan for the last contest, and I sort of forgot. I'll keep that in mind this month. I am still going to put the Oct '07 maps together into one map pack though.

the rules say you can only give them one cube... I'm designing the first puzzle, to give the player both a cube and a sphere, and they have to choose which to take with them. Each having advantages the rest of the map... does that work? Razz

Sounds cool to me, as long as you follow the other rules.

Only one companion cube seems fair, but are we allowed other normal weighted storage cubes if they only take part in one puzzle/room/etc?

I think that's only fair, it's a little to difficult to force players to only have 1 weighted object for an entire map. It's an interesting challenge, but perhaps better suited for a more themed competition, as opposed to a monthly competition. (I do really like the whole monthly competition idea though, keep it up. Smile)
Are we going to have a <Holiday Name Here> competition too? Very Happy

I'm still not entirely confident that I have what it takes to make a map worthy of competing, but I sure as hell will be submitting a map this time around. Last time I was very late in learning Hammer, so I missed the deadline.

Question:
"only in this thread, other places will not count"
Consider this a pretty obvious question, but seeing as this is a different competition then the first. Does this mean that we can release the map to the public (other sites, friends, etc) after we submit the map to TWP? Neutral

Hehe.. i've got to enter this! Even if my map will be rubbish. I need to try out the new source SDK first, but hopefully things will be easier.

Good luck to everyone else!

1. You are allowed to use one (1) cube, which has to be the companion cube.

2. There will most likely be a <Holiday Name Here> competition, but what do I know?

3. You don't have to be a supermapper to enter here. As long as you're having fun mapping you're worthy to enter the competition.

4. You can release your maps anywhere you like after the compo end.

To clarify about what me and Espen meant about the one Companion Cube is, the player can't get multiple Companion Cubes just because people like them. Also, if the player loses/destroys/fizzles his or her Companion Cube, the map needs to end since they can't get another one!

Play through Chamber 17 again to get a feel for the Companion Cube's map and puzzle design, since there were examples of all Portal techniques (with the exception of flinging) in that map.

And if you have flinging, make sure it's without the cube in hand. Because flinging while carrying is a bitch.

I don't think the map should have to end completely. One of the good things about Portal is the fact that death is generally the only form of losing. Even if you accidentally screw a map up, the game has methods to avoid from getting you 'stuck'. The map should be allowed to respawn the cube back to the area in which it was initially created, just like in the real game. (If you throw your box on top of the staircase where it's unreachable and walk away, the cube will respawn.
