The only thing I didn't really like was the cake room. My instinct was to jump into one of the alcoves behind a turret and then see if I can find a way out. So I did, and I did see the way out, but then jumping back onto the platform was pretty much impossible with 4 turrets shooting at me. So I reloaded and tried the other alcove, and then the other side of the room, but none of those worked.
In the end I discovered how I should just stay on the platform, shoot a portal through the fan, and then drop through the floor. It's fairly counterintuitive (for me anyway) to just have to stay in the middle of the shooting range of 5 of those turrets, so that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. | Completely agree. I had to use a "god with noclip" cheat to knock all the turrets down. And then I saw the way out (I thought the way out is through the door).
Now, as a whole, this was awesome, it was as long (if not even longer) as the original game. For me, the last puzzle was not so confusing, I actually liked it pretty much. And the need for building a pile from the WSCs was very non-portalish _________________ Test Chamber 74:

The cake room idea is to just wait when GLaDOS tells you to not move.
Then you just shoot behind the fans and beneath your legs.
You have about 5 second to do that, only then the turrets activates.
After I saw some vids and comments of people who played the map I understand how unclear the idea is.
My beta testers are idiots. |

Massive Spoiler Alert, for both the PFV Mappack and the original game!
Maybe you might make the solution more clearly by removing other options. For example: remove the possibility to jump on the ledge of the androids, maybe by some means of fences. That will force players to find another solution. Or you hide the androids behind doors untill the elevator stops moving. When players see androids, the first thing they think of is: I gotta get the hell out of its shooting range! Even if they are not yet activated, the player will still see them as a threat. The same for the fire pit: the player does not know that the elevator won't descend into it as it did at the end of the original game. Preventing the player from reaching the ledge may be a plausible solution there. _________________

I have been stuck in this map pack for -weeks-. I'm in the broken test chamber with the red fizzler on the floor over two buttons and the weighted cube dispenser over the raised platform breaks. It's fairly obvious that somehow I have to get up the dispenser to where the red arrow points, the problem is I -can't- do it. I've tried putting portals all over the room up there but they won't stick, I've tried flinging myself up the tube by jumping off the platform into a portal with another portal on the raised platform, but it won't send me high enough, hell, I've tried to fling the weighted cube up there to see if it could make it and dislodge the stuck cubes. I've tried everything that I can think of and it hasn't worked. Is there a specific trick to this? Someone send me a PM or post the answer here or something? _________________ Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty. |

I've been enjoying this map so long... when something becomes bloody impossible, when it means I -have- to cheat to get past it... that drops my opinion of it sharply. I'd rather it just be that I suck.
In my opinion a puzzle should be -hard- to figure out, easy to actually -do- once you've figured out what to do. After I go '...hey, I think i've figured it out' it should take at most 7 or 8 tries to solve it, or I should realize that I'm headed up a dead end. I remember a map pack I downloaded where -what- I had to do was easy to figure out, there could have been flashing neon signs saying 'GO HERE' and then to actually DO it it took me more than 50 tries. I deleted it before I finished the second chamber. A puzzle should not be solved by 'you are standing in -just- the right location before you do this, down to the pixel, and you jump into the portal at -just- the right angle, and you have to take 3 billion tries to get it right. _________________ Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty. |

| Stand on the the block beneath the box dropper, make a blue portal exactly in the center. then place a yellow portal on the ceiling somewhere in the room, get into the blue on, while falling in mid are open a yellow portal beneath your legs and fly all the way up into the box dropper. |

Flinging
You should be thinking with portals.
It's really amazing how you can do a map the wrong way... I remember I once jammed a door with a box to complete the level, I just couldn't think of a way to finish it properly... Portal requires a weird way of thinking, no wonder you were stuck there for weeks. _________________

I would rather call this like an expansion. |

If sources can be believed, it is an expansion.

Naturally, take this with a grain of salt, but if it's true...
This is a great map pack, but I really don't think it's up to Valve's standards. There's invisible walls, confusing level design, surfaces that go from portalable to non-portalable and vice versa, untextured (black) areas, and certain concepts, such as the "portal holes", are used almost ad nauseum.
Does anyone know if this can be trusted? |
