well, lets think of this:
in portal, you can stand between 2 portals, placed on a wall.
the problem with that is, the gap between the portals is about 0.000001 mm thick, therefore wouldnt you be sliced in half?

You'd probably run into yourself, resulting in you not passing through the wormhole between the portals as you cannot enter the portals. You're blocking yourself at the exact point where one portals morphs into the other. You can only enter one portal at a time, as well, but since portals can only be entered from 1 side (try it with noclip, you can't enter a portal from the backside), you would exit the other portal, and run into yourself.

I thought we already solved this one earlier?

@Coop: I don't even understand the problem as stated, but you're probably right. Someone should write up a tl;dr version of this thread on the wiki with answers to some of the simpler questions.

PostPosted: Sat Aug 02, 2008 4:53 pm    Post subject: Light through Portals? Reply with quote

I have this new speculation that I just thought of.

We all know how if you were to spawn a portal above you and then one directly below you, you would fall endlessly till you decided to stop.

Well what if you were to simply turn on a laser and have its light facing down the portal, logically the light would go through the bottom portal and out the portal above it and so on and so fourth just like you were when you were falling.

Now remove the laser, what happens to the previous beams? They must still be there right or no? I mean would the beam of light continue going through from the previous beams you shined or what?

What I'm trying to say is, shouldn't the beam continue endlessly like you even without the laser feeding the beam?

At first I was like if you remove the source then it will just disappear, but thinking heavily on it. If the beam were strong enough, it should keep on going till it hit something to stop it.

If I'm not explaining it well enough just ask questions.

Well, first off, the beam would not continue forever with the source on because the source of the beam would be blocking its path.
For instance, if the source was a laser pointer, the laser beam would enter one portal, exit the other, and stop on the back of the pointer.
Secondly, considering the speed of light and the physics of the portals, I believe the beam of light would simply end once the source would turn off.

If you could have a beam without the source, then maybe you might get some interesting infinite multiplication effect with the beam when its on, because the beam would follow the same path, become two beams, then four, then eight, etc, ad infinitum.

Well yeah have it at an angle. I still feel as if the beam would keep going until an object got in the way. I kinda based this on SuperPosition. I don't know a lot about physics so, I guess my first reasoning of the situation was the correct one.

WTF? A portal shooting out through itself? Oh my aching head...

As for the whole "portal-into-a-portal" thing... If you enable sv_cheats and sv_portal_placement_never_fail, then shoot two portals at the EXACT SAME SPOT on a surface, it looks like one portal that has a mirrorlike surface. You can walk right through it, and you even have Ghost Collision (to use a ProjectFUN term) with yourself. If it was possible for a solid object to have Ghost Collision with itself in the real world, then you can have a mirrored portal event like this. It also makes it seem like one Companion Cube has become two Very Happy
Seeing Chell and the Portal-Clone Chell inside each other is best seen if thirdperson is enabled.

Laser going infinitely through a portal: I saw a YouTube video about the Portal Playground map (which I can't seem to get it to work... Could someone tell me where to find a .bmz version of the map plx?), where the player had two portals on opposite walls, directly in front of the Rocket Turret, and if it was at exactly the right location, you see multiple targeting lasers shooting across the room. Then the Rocket Turret fires, the rocket goes through the same portals multiple times, and it eventually hits itself with its own missile XD

It is possible to slice yourself in half with a portal. Usually, the game teleports you out of whichever portal end you're less into, but if your midpoint is at the exact level of the event horizon (where you're officially "inside" the portal), and you shoot one portal somewhere else, you get killed. This has only happened once, and to do it, you have to do it at the part of the facility where you stick your head through a portal to get on top of a crusher. I wonder what would happen if you spawned a Storage Cube in the portal, then fired another portal elsewhere? Would the cube do like what happens with a fizzler?

As part of a previously mentioned required test protocal, we can no longer lie to you. We have broken the laws of physics. Again.

When you shoot a portal at an object, such as a cube or a camera, it doesn't hit the object. It goes through it onto the surface behind or underneath it, causing the camera to crash and burn, and the cube to fall into the incinerator.

no that was if you shoot portal on wall another portal on wall and grab wall (with portal) and insert it into one portal...

Okay...

Well, since the game removes any portals on an object that starts moving (like the platforms in the Portal TFV mappack), the only way to make the object move the portals into each other without destroying the moving portal is to stretch space like a rubber band. Local space-time around both portals would be normal (or at least what IS normal space-time for a portal Very Happy), while the physical distance between the portals would decrease.
Of course, warping space-time like this within close proximity to a portal might asplode the universe, like trying to open two wormholes near each other, or opening a wormhole from within a black hole.
Okay, none of that made any sense whatsoever. Maybe I should try reading some of Stephen Hawking's books before trying to explain this type of thing again... Anyone know where I can get a copy of "More Things You'll Never Understand"?
